In the past two decades, Slam have defined techno in Scotland, cultivated many artists of note on their Soma label, and remixed everyone from Daft Punk to Underworld. The legendary UK duo, comprising of Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle, have travelled far and wide, leaving scorch marks on dance-floors worldwide, touring Australia, the USA, Europe, South America and Japan. They hold residencies at 3 of the UK's best clubs (Pressure & the Sub Club in their hometown of Glasgow and Fabric in London). The last few years have been the most prolific period in Slam’s career. Performing dynamic sets at many leading festivals including Time Warp, Mayday, Bestival, Glade, Awakenings, Glastonbury, Monegros and T In The Park. They have also played at some of the world’s best clubs including the legendary Womb in Tokyo, Cocoon in Frankfurt, Rex in Paris and Berlin's infamous Watergate and Berghain. Their Soma Records label hit its 20th birthday in 2011, which is a great achievement in any industry never mind the fickle music business. In this prestigious year, Slam were also nominated as the ‘Greatest Dance Act of All Time’ in the institutional UK Dance music magazine Mixmag. Few come as well versed in family values as that of long serving techno legend Adam Beyer. A husband, father and certified underground icon, the Stockholm-based DJ/producer has come to embody one of the most consistent and carefully constructed legacies to emerge from Europe and hold influence across the continents. From festival main stages and coveted club floors through to the global airwaves and Beatport charts alike, Beyer’s extended musical legacy is felt across the board. At the outset of 2016, Beyer is positively beaming about the way things have panned out. “This is the most exciting it’s ever been - I’ve finally ended up where I was trying to get,” he explains. “As a techno DJ it’s never going to happen overnight. It’s a long road to walk to get to that point where you have earned the resect and loyalty of the industry and the fans.” Many an advocate of the genre came before Beyer, but few have held a presence within the world of techno as respected and long serving. A DJ first and foremost, life as a producer saw Beyer gradually hone and perfect a sound that would seemingly fill a void within the modern musical landscape. Serving a more functional take on the sound that still honoured some of the heyday genre hallmarks of North America and mainland Europe, Adam’s mantra has remained a relatively simple one: Respect the sound, maintain its integrity and gradually push things forward. Brick-by-brick, the sound became a signature felt across club land, but a connection remains between the sound of Adam’s earliest work and the sought after productions he now brandishes. At the helm of Adam Beyer’s career stands a brand that has taken techno to truly global heights. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016, Drumcode’s full-hearted philosophy of releasing music always with the DJ in mind has allowed the label to expand into an all-encompassing brand, one now heralded as much as a musical identity as it is an attitude among the underground community. Providing a rare opportunity for Beyer to simultaneously renew what is current whilst looking to the next generation of talents, it’s expansion into branded nights across the globe has made this one of the best travelled brands in modern techno, with its branded radio show taking further flight with broadcasts across more than 53 different countries. Its sound has been imitated, it’s durability tested by the changing tides of the music industry, but Drumcode’s ongoing peak is a testament to a brand that has dared to take the long way around in the name of becoming a sustainable and consistent musical powerhouse. Behind the decks, there are many different forces to be experienced from Beyer. Be it an international festival headline spot or a more intimate club show, his solo sets adapt and evolve to fit the various moods of his globetrotting tour schedule. Alongside partner Ida Engberg, looser afterhours sets with the ability to focus on songs have become a favourite across the international club circuit. Paired alongside his ability to take the stage with numerous members of the global techno community, Adam Beyer’s live persona truly knows no limits. Opting for business as usual over tired celebratory gimmicks, Beyer approaches 2016 in fighting form. Kick-starting a brand new venture in the form of Junction 2 Festival, a suitably stacked out summer of international festival and Ibiza dates add to a marker year for Beyer. Whether it’s on record, behind the decks or under the reliable Drumcode umbrella, Adam Beyer continues to unravel an unprecedented success story for the global underground circuit.
It is hard to imagine a list of prolific producers for 2011 without Christian Smithʼs name towards the top. Having consistently dominated charts and DJs playlists with a steady flow of releases on high profile labels like Bedrock, Systematic, 100% Pure, Soma, Global Underground, Mistakes Music, 1605 and his own Tronic imprint, there has barely been a month go by without news circulating of an exciting new Christian Smith production. As such, the techno tastemaker begins 2012 secure in his position as one of the most evergreen performers in his field. A DJ and producer who has operated at the top of his game for over a decade. Experienced enough to intuitively gauge what works best on the dance floor yet open-minded enough to move with shifting trends; Smith has accomplished the dual achievement of being both unshakably credible amongst his peers and popular within a global audience, as a whole new generation of fans discover Christianʼs trademark blend of high impact tech house and musical techno. However, this latest chapter of what has been a varied and dynamic career will come as no surprise to those who have followed Christian Smith’s productions over recent years. Having delivered the crossover record of 2008 - Total Departure on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode label – Christian followed up with a succession of fresh sounding club bombs that surfaced on John Digweed’s Bedrock label, Dubfire’s Sci+Tec, the legendary Renaissance, and Steve Lawler’s ultra cool Viva imprint throughout 2009. Next came chart-topping productions such as the Beatport #1 Air Miles track on 100% Pure, the anthemic remixes of Carl Craig’s seminal At Les, which proved to be a mainstay of Beatport’s Top 10 through summer 2010, and a run of club-smashing tracks such as Pitanga (Systematic), Cabecudas, System Of Survival, (Bedrock), The Price of Freedom (1605) and Automatic (100% Pure). 2012 promises more of the same with new projects for Bedrock, Systematic and 100% Pure as well as new material on Tronic including a collaboration EP with Florian Meindl and remixes for Marc Romboy and Bushwacka. Supplementing Christianʼs original output has been a series of remixes of classic and current tracks which have propelled Smith to the position of being one of the most in-demand remixers within his scene. Underworld (Dark & Long), Laurent Garnier (Flashback), Funk D’Void (Diabla) and Robotman aka Richie Hawtin (Do Da Doo) have all been reborn thanks respectful but energized reworks of stone-cold club anthems, while artists as varied as John Digweed, Sharam, Steve Angelo, Bushwacka, Mauro Picotto, Marc Romboy, Rodriguez Jr, Darren Emerson, Gabriel Ananda, Spektre, D-Nox & Beckers and Doomwork have all turned to Christian for something extra on their releases. The net result has been the successful transformation of Christian from a member of the old school techno-elite to one of the lead players in the current marketplace with a 22nd placing in Resident Advisors “most charted producer of all time” poll and an almost non-stop presence in the upper end of the Beatport sales charts - an achievement recognized by the award of 3rd place in Beatport’s 2010 “Best Techno Producer” poll. The popularity of Christianʼs big-room, crossover sound with its melodic, euphoric highs and rhythmical funk energy is a testament to the multi-genre draw of Christianʼs music. This breadth of appeal is evident in both the DJ support Christian receives and also in the gigs Christian plays. Regular supporters ranging from techno stalwarts like Richie Hawtin and Adam Beyer through to tech house DJs like 2000 And One and Stephan Bodzin, and even trance superstars like Tiesto and Sander Van Doorn. In addition to Christianʼs shows for Bedrock and Systematic at the Miami and ADE conferences respectively, 2011 saw Christian perform all over Europe, North America, Asia and South America with notable stops at Pacha Buenos Aeries, Womb Tokyo, Space Ibiza, Klubbers Day Madrid, Watergate Berlin, Lovelands Amsterdam, Space Miami, H2O Mexico City, The Loft Barcelona, Café DʼAnvers Antwerp, Ellui Seoul, Cocoon Frankfurt, The Egg London, Crobar Buenos Aires, Circus Montreal and Smart Bar Chicago. Proof, if it was needed, that it is possible for an already successful producer to reinvent their sound while maintaining their relevance and position at the very pinnacle of electronic music.
Marco Bailey is somewhat considered an icon when it comes to techno and the dance music industry as a whole. It starts with a beat, and for Marco that as in the late 80’s. In 2014 he celebrated 25 years of Marco Bailey, a true achievement for someone who is an ambassador for the scene as well as an amazing DJ and producer. He grew up in Belgium, and it all started out when he went to a small local club in his nearby city. At this point, he knew little and didn't have any musical heroes, but soon released that he would rather be behind the decks than on the dance floor. After teaching himself his early days in the 90’s were all about hard work and dedication. Playing gigs for small fees or sometimes even for free, this was how Marco learnt the trade and got to his feet, created a small local following playing everything from rock, funk and hip-hop. In 1994 he found house and techno, where he started releasing on some small labels, under “Marco Bailey”. His break came in 2000 with his first EP on Carl Cox’s Intec imprint with “Play It Back”. Over the next couple of years he worked on his own imprint, launching MB Elektronics, with the first release in 2002 with “Caprioska”. The releases came flowing over the next few years, which saw the release of his critically acclaimed “Rube Boy” album back in 2004, soon followed by “Dragon Man” LP on John Digweed’s Bedrock in 2011. Since 2000, he has had numerous releases on Intec as well as Bedrock who have supported his techno productions from the beginning. Not forgetting labels including Sleaze and Drumcode in recent years, as well as his very own MB Elektronics, with now over 150 releases to date since its inception, the label is considered one of the top techno imprints in the industry, with releases from the likes of Adam Beyer, Joseph Capriati, The Advent, Nic Fanciulli and Speedy J to name a few. His most recent album was with 12 track “High Volume” released back in 2013 on MB Elektronics, dubbed by some techno aficionados as a masterpiece. It was at this time, he also released an up close and personal documentary “Marco Bailey”. His Electronic Force podcast has been a huge success from the get-go, with almost 300 episodes to date, he has had every artist on board from Carl Cox, Alan Fitzpatrick, Umek, Joseph Capriati, Sam Paganini and Carlo Lio. It’s heard by millions of listeners in more than 50 countries. Marco has been touring relentlessly throughout his career, he’s an artist who can say he has probably played at almost every club in the world, and been listed at the top of major festivals. He hasn't stopped, and this summer was no exception his MATERIA brand taking a new home at Vista Club, Ibiza. Every Sunday, he offered artists including Sam Paganini, Carlo Lio, Julian Jewell, and Paul Ritch for the closing on the 28th August all came out to party with Marco and the crowd. You can expect to see the MATERIA brand reach far and wide this year, with parties in London, Vienna, Amsterdam and Tokyo planned this winter. Mid October will see the release of the MATERIA compilation mix, a collection of tracks selected personally by Marco, of both his own releases and all the artists which played at MATERIA in Ibiza this summer. MBR Limited is his latest label project currently with 13 releases from a selection of artists. There will also be 20 limited edition series on the label from Marco himself, showing the deeper, darker and purer sound of techno he has been producing of late. The next release is due out on the 21st October with “Gravity Drag” EP – keep your ears peeled for this one, as it's a true dance floor destroyer. 2016 continues to be another landmark year for Marco, with his first MATERIA residency considered a huge success, the brand looks to move worldwide, and the labels are only continuing to grow. He is a true pioneer of Techno, and has no plans to put on the brakes anytime soon.

Pfirter, is one of Argentina's finest techno exports. Pushing a sound that is at once dark and uplifting, old school and fresh, he's gradually evolved into a club music all-rounder, DJing, producing and running one of techno's brightest imprints, MindTrip. He's put out massive records on the likes of CLR, Figure and Stroboscopic Artefacts, and performed everywhere from Berghain and Tresor to Awakenings, I Love Techno and Time Warp. It was in his hometown of Buenos Aires that Juan Pablo Pfirter first made a name for himself, starting out on the radio as a fresh-faced 15-year-old. In 2000, after stints behind the decks at various clubs in the capital, he left radio to focus on DJing. Soon after, he turned his hand to production, and by 2005 he was embarking on his first European tour. What he'd experience there would change his outlook forever. 12 months later, in 2006, he set up the first version of MindTrip Music. This eventually led to Pfirter, followed by the likes of Barem and Jonas Kopp, across the Atlantic to Europe in 2012. That same year, he rebranded the label MindTrip Rec. It's a move that's worked wonders, and he's since released music from Oscar Mulero, Lucy, Chris Liebing, Tripeo and Markus Suckut, as well as eight EPs of his own original material. 2017 will see further development of the label with a select group of releases scheduled as well as the MindTrip Podcast, which is a monthly offering of music exclusively curated from artists that best represent the sound and vision of the label. It is anyone's guess as to just how far Pfirter can continue to challenge and push himself and the wider techno scene.
